Continuing Potty Breaks and Attaching Go Potty Cue We have been offering the puppies potty breaks in either their indoor litter box, or outdoor toilet area, for several weeks. By now the puppies should be going from meals to void as a matter of habit. Continue to encourage the puppies to go from their crate meals directly to the litter box to void after eating by popping a treat in the mouth of any puppy who voids in the appropriate place.Since we have been marking and treating puppies for voiding after meals, and building this habit, it’s easy to attach a cue to this behavior (if you have not already been using one.) I use “go potty” because it’s intuitive for the new owner. A verbal cue is also very valuable during house training, and for puppies who grow into dogs who travel and need to void when asked in a variety of different locations.1.As puppies move to the toilet area (either indoors or outdoors) use your Go Potty cue.2.The first puppy who voids gets a treat.3.Then repeat your cue, and treat the next puppy who voids.4.Continue on until you are satisfied most of the puppies have relieved themselves.Try to use your Go Potty cue when you expect a puppy to void, continuing to treat as much as is realistic. We will continue to ignore any voids outside the toilet area, it’s no big deal at this age, we just want to reinforce puppies who hit the litter box. Puppies are very observant, so they will see what is working for the other puppies and mimic that.
