The Different Types of Urgency Campaigns You Can Create
By Susanne Shelton

The supplies you will need for the course depends on the age of your dogs when you take this course.

All families will need:

  • Enough chews and pacifiers for each puppy or dog. Purchase chews in identical pairs ranging from low value to very high value.  Pacifiers can be purchased based on individual puppy skill level and preferences.
  • Abundance of training bait (ranging from low value kibble to high value treats)
  • An adult dog sized cot bed, comfy rubber backed rug, or flat style dog bed.
  • Appropriate collar/harness, 4-6 foot leash, and long leash (at least 10 feet long) for each dog.
  • A mechanical clicker plus training bait bag. Ideally one set per human training the dogs.

Young puppies who are not fully house trained, or able to be left alone unattended will need additional supplies.    EACH puppy requires some of it’s own supplies!   While puppies can share toys, pacifiers, and food they will each need their own set up that contains.

  • Nighttime crate preferably of adult dog size.
  • Daytime crate (optional)
  • Daytime playpen

Juvenile or adolescent dogs who are house trained and safe left alone unattended will need (per dog):

  • Crate (if crate trained, and crate training is encouraged)
  • (If not crate trained) Several baby gates tall enough to prevent jumping and without horizontal bars so that the dogs cannot climb over them.

  1. I might be late to this party. Our litter mates are almost 6 months old, and I’m worried some of their behaviors may be ingrained now. They might be too big for individual play pens now, but we do have outside separate kennels which coukd be used.

    1. Hi Joan, Correct if your girls are older then playpens won’t be sturdy enough for them. You can use your crates for the playpen work with the same effect. If they are not crate trained now is a good time to consider this because multi dog households will often need to use crate management at various points in their dog’s lives. So if they are not crate trained that is something to consider starting now. You can use the kennels as well, though they may find being put outside away from the family as a punishment which will defeat the purpose, so consider how the girls feel about their kennels and if they need some conditioning to help them view the kennels as a good place that can be started now too. If they are generally happy to be separated you can also use a baby gate system and use an interior room.
